For the past 4 years, I have been a part of the Campus Ambassador program at CMU. With this, I give campus tours to visiting high school juniors and seniors who are interested in attending CMU. I lead them throughout campus, highlighting what CMU has to offer while also providing personal stories and testimonials to my experience at school. I originally signed up as an ambassador, because CMU wasn’t my first choice in school. It wasn’t until I began school that I realized how perfect CMU was for me. I wanted to show future college students that you don’t have to be 100% in your decision, as long as you make an effort to make the most of your experience.
This semester was pretty busy for me, so I wasn’t able to give as many tours has I typically would other semesters. I felt like I let my university down in a way, but I tried to make the tours I did give as great as possible. I also had the opportunity to represent our program, by nomination, when a third-party firm came to evaluate the admissions program!
I have learned a lot through this program. I take these large groups of strangers through campus by myself, responsible for their perception of CMU and potentially their future attendance here. I have had to perfect my speech and be educated on the topics I discuss. Giving tours also takes a balance of managing the tour time, keeping each member engaged, tailoring the information to students as allowed by the size of the group, etc. I think this program has a lot of talent and provides a lot of good for the university admissions. I have also had to be open and willing to share my experience and do all of this in an articulate way. It is also a matter of being fun and engaging to; I hear a lot from groups that other schools were boring or didn’t share what they wanted to hear. It has taken a lot of confidence building to continue this process which has done me a lot of good as a leader. As much as CMU has given to me, I think it only fair to give back too by representing the leadership and community we have developed in Mount Pleasant.
I believe this program has allowed me to appreciate CMU so much more. Being able to tell stories of my time here allows me to look back on fun, new experiences I have had and reminisce. I think each tour I gave has reaffirmed my decision to attend CMU and I take the job of showcasing CMU to others very seriously.
